This beautifully hand-sewn embroidered pillow comes from a Bedouin Tribe of the Negev Desert in Israel. This pillow features beautiful red wool with dark-brown outline on white background, displaying floral and geometric motifs. Color in the Bedouin tradition is symbolic, and the color red signifies marriage. These pillows are created as part of a dowry that a woman would bring into her marriage.
Embroidery is a handicraft familiar to most Bedouin women from childhood, an activity that they grow up learning. The women of the tribe use the traditional embroidery patterns, which once embellished their long, black dresses, to adorn wall-hangings, pillow-cases, bags, purses, wallets, clothing, and so on. Their work is based only on patterns indigenous to the Negev.
